Eureka Outsider at Oakland Museum

Born in Italy, in 1887, Romano Gabriel immigrated to America in 1913. He settled in Eureka and worked as a carpenter and gardener. Gabriel also worked on a fantastic wooden sculpture garden for about 30 years until his death in 1977.

An article in today's Eureka Times Standard continues:

A folk art triumph, the garden -- flowers, trees, carousels and droll faces carved from wooden fruit crates -- continues to garner attention three decades after its artist's passing.

Most recently, the Oakland Museum has requested the loan of samples from the garden to be included in an upcoming exhibit of California's “outsider” artists, which will feature the work of primitive and folk artists.

A new, illustrated children's book, “The Wooden Garden of Romano Gabriel” by Deanna Enos, also debuted this year.

Deanna, I'm not having the show. I have nothing to do with putting it on or curating it etc. I am just reporting on it and promoting it.

Best of luck on your picture book. Here's one of mine
